There are less than two weeks to go until the start of our major Club fundraiser, the Kenmore Rotary Cash for Christmas Raffle. It is now time for Kenmore Rotarians to stand up and be counted! A big thank you to the 14 members who have signed up to fill 40 shifts. That still leaves 26 members who have yet to sign up to fill around 67 shifts. I encourage all members to get onto Club Runner to sign up this week. I am aware that one member is undergoing knee surgery and will be unable to help. However, I am confident that most members (if not all) should be able to find suitable shift times to suit your schedules. If you have any difficulties signing up, please make contact with Brian Kison or Jim Dalton who will ensure you are signed up. The raffle is an excellent opportunity for Kenmore Rotarians to:
raise much needed funds that enables the club to make a difference in our community;
meet members of the community that we all serve;
have some fun with your fellow Rotarians.

I would also like to encourage members to book their tickets to the Trivia Night on Saturday 9 November. The Club has partnered with Brookfield Rotary, Brookfield State School and Upper Brookfield State School. Let’s all ensure the Trivia Night is a success by booking your tickets as soon as possible. Members' Spots: Roger presented a banner from Arlington Heights, Illinois USA. President Dave mentioned Kenmore High Interact Club sold donuts at the school recently but because year 12 students had already left, he gave the left over donuts to retirement homes. He also spoke about the District Conference in Toowoomba and that early bird registrations end at the end of this month. Ricky explained her Christmas time coordination projects namely Christmas Hampers, The Giving Tree and Community Panty in addition to selling tickets at the Christmas Raffle. Michael mentioned the Club being a finalist in the Change Maker Awards. Margaret agreed to accompany him to the Awards Night on November 7, Ken mentioned the Board had decided to sell the trailer previously used for the collection of cans (see below) and finally Urvi talked about the upcoming Christmas Raffle.

“I am a Computer Scientist from Brazil, spent time doing part of my PhD in the US at Michigan State University. Then, I moved back to Brazil and lived there for 13 years working in several jobs, one of them being an English Teacher. In 2015, my family lived in Melbourne for 8 months while my husband (Luis) was taking a Sabbatical year at La Trobe University. After this period, we were back to Brazil, but things were different and after 10 months, we moved to Australia again but this time in Brisbane where my husband got a job at the University of Qld. Initially, I started volunteering as a Research Assistant at the Head Office of one Aged Care Provider, developing my career over there for 6 years. In 2024 I left this job and now works for Qld Health working as a Principal Project Manager for eHealth. I have been happily married to Luis for 26 years, who is also a member of Kenmore Rotary, and together we have 2 children – Marina & Bernardo.
Why Rotary? The reason to move to the US was because my husband got a Rotary Scholarship to start his PhD there. Now that Luis and I are in a different phase of our lives, we decided that it was our time to help the community and nothing better than to become a Rotary member.”
Jennifer Underhill
“I grew up and attended school in the western suburbs which included a year of high school in Canberra. The majority of my working life has been in financial services in funds management and then as a paraplanner supporting financial advisers.
Due to my volunteer roles in the Centenary suburbs, I was contacted by and commenced working as the Office Manager and Electorate Officer for Hon Milton Dick MP (Speaker of the House of Reps) in a non-political role assisting constituents with Federal portfolio issues for 6 years. My new position is working part time as a Councillor Advisor with a Logan City Councillor.
In the 1980’s I was a charter member of Interact at my high school and this started my path of volunteering following in my parents footsteps. I have been volunteering with Centenary Meals on Wheels for over 12 years and also secretary on the committee. I am also on the committee of Care Kits for Kids Qld as orders co-ordinator and newsletter editor. Each Christmas, Ruthven and I volunteer for Brisbane Basket Brigade which we love and have also been committee members.

Kenmore Rotary who obtained a Containers for Change Scheme ID when the scheme began in November 2018, has been nominated for a “Change Maker Award Charity/Community Group.” KRC was an early adopter in the movement to recycle plastic containers and the program, run by the members of the club, has evolved into a wide array of collection points across Kenmore through to Moggill.
Our members Michael Fitzgerald and Ken Ryan have used their combined career knowledge to take the project to the next level since COVID put everything on hold.
“Initially, we had two very large cages manufactured that were placed at E-Waste in Kenmore Hills and Pullenvale Marketplace,” says former Town Planner, Ken Ryan.
The Board has agreed that the Trailer used for collection of cans and bottles is no longer required as all pick ups are completed by our contractor (Community Co Recycling) to COEX.
Please make an offer before we advertise this well preserved, fully registered (12 months) 2.45 mm 1.5 with 510mm sides, manufactured by JUST TRAILERS who have produced trailers for our Xmas raffle for several years. It has a heavy duty fitted tarp cover (not shown) The club spent $6,600 on the trailer and cover in July 2020
Our contractor has shown interest but it may be something a member or family may desire given its limited use over last 4 years.
