Our last meeting showcased the incredible talent within our Kenmore Rotary Club. Our gathering featured an enlightening and entertaining presentation by one of our own members, Dr Claylia Ward, who delved into some revealing truths about tooth decay. Her insights into the complexities of oral health, from the impact of diet to the latest advancements in preventative care, were not only informative but also a testament to the wealth of knowledge we have within our club. Claylia’s talk reminded us of the hidden expertise among us, proving that our members’ talents extend far beyond the usual realms.
In addition to Claylia’s presentation, we had the privilege of hearing from Hemish Dubey, a remarkable young speaker who recently represented our community at the International Youth Science Forum held in London. Hemish’s passion for science and innovation was evident as he shared his experiences and the groundbreaking projects he encountered at the forum. His enthusiasm and dedication to scientific advancement were truly inspiring, and it was clear that he embodies the future of our world’s innovation. His story is a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within the next generation and how we, as a club, can support and nurture their growth.
Looking ahead, I am excited to announce our next guest speaker, Dr Karen Moni, who will be joining us to discuss "Literacy Education: Preparing Adults with Intellectual Disabilities for Their Future." This presentation is particularly timely as it aligns with Rotary's Basic Education and Literacy Month. I encourage everyone to attend and engage in this important conversation about expanding educational opportunities and inclusivity.
As we continue to celebrate the remarkable talents within our club, let us remember that each of us brings unique skills and perspectives that contribute to our collective success. Our strength lies in this diversity and in the shared commitment to service and community. Toasts: The Chair proposed the Rotary Toast and recognised the traditional custodians of the land upon which we meet.
PP Michael Fitzgerald proposed the international toast to the RC of Boroko. The Club was chartered in 1964 and in recent years RC of Kenmore has worked on a number of projects in PNG with the RC of Boroko. Its major annual fundraiser is the Melbourne Cup lunch.
Welcome: President Dave acknowledged our guests and all Club members.
He welcomed back Doug Anderson who we had not seen for some time due to work and personal reasons.
President Dave reminded members of the Club Runner training on Saturday at 1:30PM at the Kenmore Library.
He mentioned that a questionnaire had been left on the table for each member to make suggestions for an appropriate name for the garden show.
The Kenmore High Interact Club has been active fundraising to support an orphanage.
The RC Brookfield is organising a Trivia Night on 2 November which will be supported by the RC Kenmore. David Kearney is the Kenmore contact.
Members’ Spots:
PP Judy Xavier mentioned that on a recent visit to Berlin she met a member of a Rotary Club who was supporting Ukrainian refugees. Judy is proposing a donation from our Club to support this cause.
Ross Thomas reminded members that the assembly of solar lights (Solar Buddies) was taking place at 10:40 on Thursday at St Peters school.
Claylia Ward mentioned some of the social activities planned including the Trivia Night and also the District Conference.
Guest Speaker
There were 2 speakers organised for the meeting being Hemish Dubey and Rotarian Claylia Ward.
After providing some background on the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) the Chair introduced Hemish to talk about his experience LIYSF in 2024. Hemish provided an overview of the program which included the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals from across the world, scientific net-working and visits and cultural exchanges. He also highlighted some of key experiences that he took from the Forum including the impact on his future goals in in the disciplines of mathematics and mechanical engineering.
Hemish thanked Rotary for the opportunity and support to attend the LITSF this year.
The Chair Sanjoti thanked Hemish for his interesting presentation and wished him well in his future studies.
The Chair introduced our second speaker - our member Claylia Ward to talk about “The truth about tooth decay”. Her presentation will be included in this Bulletin but she concluded by reminding us that time is critical in preventing tooth decay and the need to drive the repair cycle and to load up the sea-saw. For further clarification revisit the presentation.

Volunteers led by the Rotary Club of Belfast made improvements to the courtyard garden of a senior home in January. The team of Rotarians, community members, and people in transitional employment through the judicial system cleared weeds, constructed raised garden platforms, and filled them with soil. Cold temperatures scaled back their plans, but it was still a “rather back-breaking” effort, says club member Jenny Boyd. A District 1160 grant of about $1,250 was used to underwrite the expense. Karen Blair, a past president and project leader, recruited colleagues from her law firm to get a little dirt under their fingernails. “This project allows all members to be involved in a very hands-on activity,” Blair says. “And even those with no gardening ability can participate by chatting with the residents over coffee.”
