The Rotary Club of Kenmore has partnered with the Kenmore State High School to deliver a youth leadership progran for students in Years 8 and 11. The Program is being offered to interested students starting inTerm 1, over a period of 8 to 10 weeks. Each session will occur in the 50-minute second break.
The Program aims for students to consider their personal leadership journey through the development of transferable skills and identifing a set of personal values that define their personal leadership style. After development of these skills and values, students will be able to apply their skills through a variety of activities that allow for self reflection and encourage a cycle of refinement.
Ten weekly 50-minute facilitated sessions that encourages group interaction and demonstration of skills. Facilitated sessions include guest facilitators such as community leaders and KSHS alumni who have demonstrated strong community leadership. Participants, in small groups, may be paired with mentors or coaches who can provide guidance, support, and feedback. Weekly self-study of approximately 40 – 60 minutes is provided so participants can complete various tasks and prepare for facilitated sessions. The self-study will assist participants in reflection, evaluation and feedback mechanisms developing self-assessment skills to measure progress, identify areas for improvement, and continuously refine their leadership abilities.
The program will be offered to Year 8 and Year 11 students in a combined format. Although from a leadership and developmental standpoint the large differences between year 8 and 11 are acknowledged, and from prior experience it is clear that year 8 students model the behaviour of year 11 students, and this expedites leadership development. Historically, more girls have participated and so there is a need to capture the attention of male students to drive increased enrolment. Generally, students have self-selected to participate in the program based on collateral provided and teacher encouragement. Teacher encouragement is central to participation being equitable across all streams and gender. Program enrolment will be capped at 50 students, with the understanding that if demand outstrips this, all efforts will be made to accommodate those wishing to participate.
