Group Captain Simon Sauer graduated from the Royal Military College (of Australia) in December 1990 as a Ground Defence Officer. His junior officer postings included the full range of core Ground Defence and general service positions covering training and operational roles, up and down the East Coast of Australia. He was promoted to Squadron Leader in July 1999, and Wing Commander in January 2008. GPCAPT Sauer served as Commanding Officer RAAF Security and Fire School, No 3 Airfield Defence Squadron, No 2 Airfield Defence Squadron and Multi-National Base Command – Tarin Kot. Operationally he supported Operation Pollard, Kuwait, 1999; Operation Gold, Sydney 2000 Olympics; Operation Tanager / Citadel, East Timor 2002, Operational Slipper, Afghanistan 2013; and Operation Covid Assist, Sydney 2020. He was promoted to GPCAPT in December 2013 and posted as Chief of Staff / Deputy Commander, Combat Support Group. He transitioned to the Reserve in July 2015, having assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer, Mates4Mates; a charity providing support to wounded, injured and ill, current and former members of the Australian Defence Force. He left Mates4Mates in June 2015, returning to Air Force reserve work. GPCAPT Sauer was the Director Air Base Operations as part of the ADF commitment to the Australian International Airshow (Avalon) in 2019, 2023 and 2025. Since December 2017, he has been an active Executive / Leadership Coach within Air Force, particularly Combat Support Group; from February 2022 he leads the Leadership Coaching Cell for HQ Air Command. GPCAPT Sauer was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the January 2010 Australia Day honours’. Previously, he was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in the June 2006 Queen's Birthday honours’. GPCAPT Sauer completed the Australian Command and Staff College throughout 2003, gaining a Master’s Degree in Management (Defence Studies). GPCAPT Sauer is married to Nicole (a former Air Force Administrative Officer) and has two adult children.
